Women’s self-defense - denying more than just a river in Egypt

One of the challenges in discussing self-defense training with women and girls is the rejection factor. You know the conversation:

  • "I will never hurt anyone."

  • "That will never happen to me."

  • "I am always safe."

  • "My husband, boyfriend [insert any male here] will protect me."

  • "I live, work, shop, etc. in a safe neighborhood."

  • "This class sounds great, but I don't have time."

As they say, denying is not just a river in Egypt.

The reality is that women's self-defense training is not just about learning to beat people. Self-defense training involves understanding different types of crime and learning to identify dangerous early warning signs. Self-defense training teaches you how to develop a safety plan. It teaches risk aversion skills. It teaches you body language, language skills and downgrade skills. Of course, it teaches you how to disable [not just hit] predators so you can escape and survive.

It is dangerous to believe that "it will never happen to me." Our motto is to prepare for the worst and prepare for the best. When you are mentally and physically committed to the safety of you and your family, if God bless you to be attacked, you will be prepared. If you are not attacked, it may just be because you are ready. So, really, you only get everything in terms of personal safety and confidence.

No one, no community is always safe. Every day has the potential to be a viable victim. By mastering the skills of identifying predator crosshairs, it will give you the advantage of starting a safety plan. Although we grew up in the fairy tale of saving the prince and protecting the dwarves, no one actually protects you except you. Given that most women know their attackers, the fairy tale rescue/protector mentality may kill you. Do you have a plan when the protector becomes an attacker?
