Self-defense techniques can take many years to practice. After learning traditional martial arts for many years, I learned some incredible skills. But what kind of self-defense technology do I use in street fights?
There is a saying that if you face an attacker, knowing that any action is better than no action. However, instead of spending years of training and practice, you can take some very direct and simple ways to deal with violent encounters. I call it street self-defense action. Some people even call them dirty fighting action!
Martial arts training like Aikido or Judo is a great thing. If you have a club in your area, I will encourage you to do so. Or, a karate or a more modern system like Choi Kwang Do might be the best for you. I encourage you to visit all local clubs, talk to teachers, and watch some courses to see which ones might be best for you personally. But are these martial arts really going to fight in the streets?
True self-defense begins with consciousness. You should always know where you are, what's going on around you, and what might happen. This is not to say that you should live in fear and panic! It's just for wise and knowing what you are doing. For example, would it be wise for a woman to go to a part of a city she did not know and arrange to meet someone she had only met in the bar before? For me, this requires a very high state of consciousness!
Imagine you park your car in the dark streets of the night. You see a shortcut and an alley, do you think will take you where you want to go? Again, if you really want to take this situation, you need a very high level of awareness.
Knowing your reaction under stress or a potential threat of violence is another key factor in true self-defense. Fortunately, most of us rarely encounter this situation. But when we do this, we need to understand how our body will react and how we can control it to cope with what is happening.
In addition to defending yourself, no other action should be taken. It is best to use simple, direct self-defense techniques. Fancy high kicks and martial arts flourish just for the movies! For example, a distracting strike will give you time to escape or take other actions. Combat should always be the last resort, and always speak first. But in some cases - especially when it comes to alcohol or other drugs - body movements may be the only answer to self-protection.
