Summary of groundbreaking cases related to inaccessible websites and disability discrimination legislation

In June 1999, Bruce Maguire filed a complaint with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission under the Australian Disability Discrimination Act. His complaint was that he was discriminated against because he could not access the content of the Olympics website.

As a highly skilled user of a refreshable braille display, he is accustomed to being able to access web content, but he cannot access important content on the Olympics website.

He won the case, but the Olympic Committee did not make the necessary changes, and he subsequently received $20,000 in damages.
