Create an opening in fencing

The traditional view is that fencers should attack on an open route. The reality is that you should neither attack on a closed line nor on an open line. First of all, it's obvious that attacks against closed lines are not hit, so you waste time, energy and opportunity while making you vulnerable to counterattacks. But why should we not attack the open line? The most illuminating answer is that your opponent knows that the line is open and waiting for you to attack there. If the opponent is stable and controls his or her actions, this is the parry and counterattack waiting.

If there are only two types of lines [open and closed], we can't attack any one, what should we do? The answer is that you have to create an opening that you can control. This means you can choose one of the following three options:

[1] Approach the critical distance and attack the open line. The critical distance is the distance that the opponent can't react quickly to block the attack....
