Why is the fence dry (or steam or standard)?

It is widely believed today that fencing without electronic scoring equipment, especially in games without electronic scoring, is a waste of time. This dry fence [also known as standard, or British steam, fence] marks a complete disengagement from the real fence. Unfortunately, what is widely accepted is completely wrong and limits the training of athletes in all three weapons in many ways.
