John Charles Akii-Bua: Olympic Golden Handicap in Africa

Born on December 3, 1949 in the village of Abako, Moroto County, Lango District, Uganda, John Charles Akii-Bua [occasionally misspelled Aki-Bua, or Aki-Buwa, or Akii-Buwa] left school as early as 15 years old. Primary education. Part of his early departure from school was related to his father's death and his having to help with family labor, where he graze cattle and work at local family retail stores. As a boy, Akii is not very competitive in track and field. His informal movement has accumulated strictness from cattle that graze and protect wild animals. Shortly after his Olympic gold medal was won, in an interview with Sports Illustrated, Aki proudly said that when he was there and would not track his grazing animals, the lion was particularly tired of his existence.
