Recently, on May 30, 1971, John Akii-Bua reduced the African record in the 400-meter hurdle to 49.7 seconds in Kampala, which gained considerable attention. But there is some doubt as to the timing and track conditions, as this event is questioned on a somewhat unknown and unrecognized African track. However, at Berkeley, the 21-year-old policeman Akii is considered to be the main contender for the gold medal. The other two most popular are Wes Williams, who is regarded as the top competitor in the United States, and Vyacheslav Skomorokhov, Russia. Williams won second place in the recent national AAU Championship with a score of 440 yards [4 yards longer than the metric circle], an impressive 49.3; and Skomorokhov, who finished fifth in the 1968 Olympics, had 49.1 people. ......
