Global fisheries crisis

As one of the oldest and most popular pastimes in the world, fishing has become a useful tool to connect generations through the pursuit of a common goal. Thousands of years ago, humans used fishing to support evolving civilizations and trade with neighboring groups. Today, fishing falls into two broad categories: business and entertainment. Commercial fishing is an industry as old as humans and very profitable. In 2011 alone, in the United States alone, recreational and commercial seawater fishing generated $199 billion. These industries have created more than 1.7 million jobs through harvesting, retailing, and processing.

One of the biggest problems in today's fisheries is the miserable mismanagement of the global fisheries population. Countries such as Japan, China, and even the United States are blatantly overfishing in the Pacific.
