Book Review - Overcoming the Dark Side of Leadership with Gary L McIntosh and Samuel D Rima

Overcoming potential failures while becoming effective leaders

"Overcoming the dark side of leadership" looks at the paradox of personal dysfunction. In this revision, authors Gary McIntosh and Samuel Rima reflect on the experience and observations of Christian leadership in the past ten years since the publication of the first edition of the book.

This book tells three questions: how to understand the development of the dark side of personality, and the problems that Christian leaders often encounter. The author's intent in Parts 2 and 3 is to help the reader identify their dark side and provide them with a five-step plan to honor or overcome this dark side.

Gary and Sam shared the conflicts they experienced in their lives, which made them aware of their personal dysfunction and taking proactive self-discovery steps to find the importance of healing and fulfillment.

More information has been added to cover the following topics: the dangers of dark surfaces and the process of mental composting. The appendix has also been expanded to include a section to help readers identify their personal dark side.

This book includes examples from the Bible and contemporary Christian leaders who have failed in the pursuit of God and used to illustrate the various functions of the leadership style of compulsive leaders, narcissistic leaders, paranoid leaders, and independent leaders. Obstacles, as well as passive aggressors.

I personally found that the "Target Insight" and "Apply Insights" features at the end of each chapter are practical tools for self-examination and self-discovery.

I also found the material in the appendix helpful. It provides: a list of available profiles, accounting group contracts, sample personal composition and performance evaluation.

This issue of "Overcoming the Dark Side of Leadership" has a new sub-heading that provides readers with new help, "How to become an effective leader by facing potential failures. Integrate relevant important information with today's proactive steps." Christian leaders help readers avoid the risks and consequences of making out-of-date and often destructive decisions that pollute their testimony and the reputation of the Christian church.

"Overcoming the dark side of leadership" is important to every Christian leader. It provides important and useful tools for pastors and provides leadership for all levels of church ministry.
